Samsung Star (S5230 / S5233) Review
If you want me to describe Samsung’s Star in a few words, that would be “a touchscreen phone for the masses.” Today, touchscreen phones are not a novelty as it was used to be a few years back and Samsung is only trying to give a touchscreen experience at an affordable price. We had a chance to test out the device for a few days and here is our verdict.
We can’t say Samsung Star is an eye-turner but considering a moderate price tag attached to it, it doesn’t disappoint either. The front sports a nice 3.2-inch QVGA screen along with Call/End buttons and the centre one acting as a back button. The sides are taken by the volume controls, charging/headphone slot on one side while the other side has a camera and a key lock button. The plastic battery cover is however, a downer that slides down pretty easily (on the loose side) to reveal the battery and the SIM card slot.
One thing you’ll notice when you hold it is its weight. It is just 92grams and with the use of plastic body, some users may feel it cheap and not classy.
Star has a 3-inch screen supporting a WQVGA resolution and 262K colors. As you would expect, the screen is decent enough to keep you hooked to watch movies or play games.
Star runs Samsung’s proprietary OS overlaid with the TouchWiz UI. TouchWiz, in simple words is a user interface developed by Samsung to combat HTC’s TouchFLO and the likes. Though initially, Samsung kept TouchWiz exclusively for Windows Mobile phones, now they have extended to non-WinMo but touchscreen phones. TouchWiz with widgets on the side may sound exciting and it is if you haven’t used TouchWiz before but over a period of time you’ll be bored of the UI. One good thing of the UI is that it allows to keep three different homescreens (three small squares denote it) which supports different wallpapers and widgets to spread between them.
It is a quad-band GSM phone that supports EDGE connectivity and no 3G. This actually shouldn’t not a problem in India since 3G is yet to roll out completely but Star’s lack of 3G may ire some users in countries where 3G is common. Call quality is not topnotch but it is at par for the phones in this range.
Many of you must be waiting for this, so here it is – the camera. Star possesses a 3.2MP sensor, digital zoom, lots of different shot modes, white balance and of course, a dedicated camera button. While it may sound good on the surface, the camera is a real disappointment. Let’s forget the fact that it does not have a flash or ISO settings but not having autofocus is surely going to cause a pain in the a** for many. No autofocus means you really have to be a pro to not shake your hands while clicking a picture, which otherwise can turn a beautiful moment into a blurry one. The video recording is not exemplary but it is able to record 15fps at QVGA resolution.
Star also comes with a music player that can be activated from inside the menu or can be accessed quickly via a widget. In fact, music player is the only thing that works in tandem with other things, say while composing messages, surfing the web etc. The phone supports a variety of formats like MP3, AAC, AAC+,WMA, AMR, WAV and integrates Samsung’s proprietary audio technology DNSe to enhance the quality of the music. Regarding the audio playback quality, it’s above par then you would expect from a sub-10k phone. The playback from the loudspeaker is crisp and easily audible in a small room while the earphone outputs the same quality but the lack of a 3.5mm audio jack may leave some users unhappy as you need ones that work with Samsung only.
Other notable features it has are FM Radio, games, accelerometer and Smart Unlock. Star supports MIDP 2.0 and since there are tons of apps and games supporting MIDP 2.0, finding and installing content won’t be that difficult. Few games effectively use the integrated accelerometer and apart from that, the accelerometer is only used to change the screen orientation.
One thing that impressed me was the Smart (Gesture) Unlock feature. The functioning of this unlock is simple – just write an alphabet on the screen in locked mode and the phone will directly take you to the desired menu. Smart Unlock supports unlocking of the phone, speed dial or launching an app.
S5230 comes with a powerful battery rated at 1000mAh and though, it is does not come close to the Samsung claims, it did give me a 1.5-2 days on a single charge from my normal usage. The usage included about 4-5 hours of calls, around 3 hours of music and an hour for other things.
On an ending note, I would like to say again that Star is not about the high-end features but it tries to deliver touchscreen experience which the consumers can get at an inexpensive price. If price is your concern but still need a good looking touchscreen phone, Star is the phone that won’t disappoint. It is selling in India at a price hovering around Rs. 9,500 mark.

I find this phone much better than the LG Cookie. Original package comes with a leather flap cover which the LG Cookie doesnt have.
I have the phone for a week and I love it.
And its cheaper than the LG Cookie too.
Friends.. It has everything the LG cookie has including the motion activation and the pics become portrait and landscape with the turn of the phone.
This is a real good touch scren phone (Star 5233 model) for its price, the multimedia is superb. I watched a whole film “love actually” on mp4 format and it did NOT lag a bit even if you forward and rewind it. The sound quality is also good, music and video wise. The camera is fine, not good in indoor setting especially with poor lighting but it has superb panoramic and continuous touch settings. Touch screen response is on average, just having moments of non-responsive screen. One thing it missed on is the calendar and memo cahracter capacity only up to 100 letters per memo. But overall, if multimedia is your thing this is a great buy. Im buying an 8gb card to check compatibility.

I think the review presented here by actual users should give you an indication that this is a great phone for its price and can be compared to iPhone in 95% respect. It doesnt have G3 or a flash.
From these review if you still have not been able to make up your mind my humble suggestion is you walk into a Hotspot or any well known mobile phone store and ask them to give you a demo of both LG Cookie and Samsung Star. Both the phones have similar features yet the Samsung Star beats the cookie on a few features which Im sure the dealer will explain.
I am using my Samsung Star for the past 3 weeks and I am absolutely satisfied with it. Yes it has motion gaming, the camera is very good but someone rightly said..definately not for indoor use unless there is a lot of artificial lighting inside. The batterly life is as good as it gets nothing to complain.
I hope this helps you make a decision. If not then I am sure you are not serious about bying a touch phone.

Your phone plays only MP4 and so you need to reformat all video into this format. Once done please use the Samsung PC software to upload it in your phone. If it doesnt work then you will need to convert it to the Samsung phone movie format. This is available in the Samsung PC suite under tools. The first icon.

The phone comes loaded with all the software you need. Remember its not a Blackberry or Nokia E series or an iPhone. So please dont expect an all in one phone. All said and done for its price is still a wonder phone and I love what its doing for me.
A question to users here : When disconecting a call I get some 6 icons for a short while and then it goes away. These are all function keys but dont appear if you keep the hold button pressed. Can anyone let me know how to keep this on the screen and use it.

. If you drop it on your bed or on a thick carpet then it won’t. If you drop it on a wooden floor its still unlikely but if you drop it on a marble or concrete floor I think any handphone would break depending on the impact. In which case it depends on how high it was dropped from

well this feature is a drawback as it keeps a copy of it, which consumes memory. It has to be manually deleted.
Has sum1 figure out a way to directly set a picture as a whole wallpaper instead of selecting a area of picture. Coz every time i need to select the margins of my pictures to adjust into idle screen wallpaper. & if we do it from settings option then the image is so bog which is not adjusted in the idle screen wallpaper. (comes the center part of the picture)..??
@vishal: you have to edit it with adobe photoshop. and the size is 720×400px. if you want to create 3 picture, you have to divide it into 240×400px/ picture.

did u activate mobile tracker in ur handset..?? if yes u’ll receive the message on the 2 nos which u must have stored in the mobile tracker application regarding the new sim no which will be replaced by the person who must be using ur cell phone.

give ur IME no to samsung customer care such that they can permanently terminate ur cell phone, if u cnat use it..no1 else does dat. the cell will become a dummy piece, of no use.

There is an option in ur settings called security.
Menu–>Settings–>security–>mobile tracker (last option)–> activate by entering 2 recipients name..who will receive the message if some other SIM is inserted into your cell phone.
Note–> Default Password is 0000 for others & 00000000 for mobile tracker change it to your own new password.
Deactivate the mobile tracker incase you wish to insert another Sim card in your cell phone otherwise the new Sim card will send the message to the 2 recipients.

I just bought a S5230 and I’m trying to watch some videos on it. I already converted the .avi files to .mp4, and the look great, but with no sound. What can I do?
@ Ravi –> Battery life is descent it works for 2 days with moderate usage..!! For e.g ..– 4 hrs of music, 2 hrs of talktime , 1-2 hrs of miscellaneous work..!! (The only thing is battery takes around 1 1/2 hrs to 2 hrs…to get full charged.)
Headset adopter ..–> Headset is been provided with it. the volume is upto 14 which is preety good.

Here is how I do it and it works fine. Convert the movie same to MP4. There are free MP4 converters available in the net.
Open the Samsung PC Suite provided with the phone. The suit will Open the Memory status. Select External Memory .. Movies.
Drag the MP4 movie to this box and it will convert itself. Once done remove the USB connection and view the video. You will get both sound and picture clearly.
How can i make a playlist in my pc & synchronize it with my handset..??

Does Accelerometer works in every screen? i mean it only works in video playback or when the set is in idle mode and i want to switch to portrait?

Can anybody tell me how to set up name search properly while trying to make a call. For example, If a contact is “Rajesh Toshniwal” it should throw up the name if I search for either “Rajesh” or “Toshniwal”, but it somehow does not work. It so happens that sometimes you remember name, sometimes a specific title like “Dr” but I find it highly inconvenient to search for contacts and I have 1500+ contacts.

Khurram…Ha ha. If you read above this phone is not a competition to iPhone. Dont forget its 1/3 the cost of an iPhone. You didnt expect to pay less than Rs.10,000 and get an equivalent of iPhone did you. You be out of your mind, no cell manufacturer would be that crazy. LMAO.

@anil: S5233 and S5230 are the same. Wi-Fi depends if you’re going to surf internet through available wi-fi connections or will surf through your operators EDGE connection.

i’m wondering about connecting to WiFi,i have a WiFi spot at my home and it’s locked,so i’m trying to connect with S5233,it doesn’t ask for any password,so i’ll be really grateful if anyone can guide me through this.

Kumar-: You need to go to your settings then to PC connections. Select the media player option. When you connect your phone to your PC it will open up just like a USB does, go to the open to view folders option. From there, you can view whatever is on your phone’s storage and those things on your memory card as well.

This is what you do. Open this website ( http://www.videotomp4.com/ ) which is basically a Youtube video conversion to MP4. Save it to a location where you can retrieve it later. Once the conversion happens it will save a file extension .MP4 .
Now open the Samsung PC Studio. Connect your phone and then explore the phone. Drag and drop the MP4 file to the external memory on the phone. The will automatically convert the MP4 file to suit your phone.
You can then play it and it will work fine.
Sure it has motion gaming. There is the dice game already installed. Try it. What more do you want from a phone which is less than Rs.10 K?

when fake call is active several secend 6 icon is appear but those are inactive.
No Nima I have not but through trial and error I think I got it. These 6 ikons are very useful and do come (most of the time) lol.

The flash for watching videos on the internet does not work as well as even watching mobile youtube! Is there anyway to get either of these to actually play a video. Right now the mobile youtube says incorrect address when clicking on a video. The desktop version shows the video player but never plays the video…never even loads video

The video records sound too. Please note that to get the audio and video you need to playback the video on Windows Media Player. I faced the same problem and this was the way out. Let me know if it works for you.
The video should play ok when you play it back on your phone. Remember to increase the volume.

Hey Guys i have just bought this phone samsung star S5233S Everything is good but the biggest drawback which i got to know after using this phone that is message memory we can only save 500 messages that sit cant have good collections of messages in this phone and the other bad feature is the message memory is diversified means 200 in inbox 200 in sent messages and 100 in drafts.

Its really very simple. Turn the phone around. Put your two thumbs next to the V (showing the direction the cover will slide out of), press hard and downwards. It slides out smoothly.

To get rid of the GPRS on your phone all you have to do is to get in touch with your service provider and discontinue the service. Simple
@Mike if the GPRS Symbol is blue then you have nothing to worry about it only use airtime when its red.

@maria: seems an issue from the router side. I would recommend you to check the router settings.
umm my router is working fine . it has 2 laptops connected to it .and net is workin fine

@maria: is your network protected? Did you try inserting password in your Star Wi-Fi? If yes, then it should automatically get the DNS.
yup i have enterd the pasword and it says dns failed:S
first it gives da error of servce unavailable than it gives the dns error
uh..maybe you should try connecting your phone to a different wireless network to see if the phone has the prob or not. If not, probably you’ll have to tinker with your router then.
i have tried other networks tooo but none of dem work. i tried to consult ma uni networking guy he said it cant b conected since it dsnt have some port:S but how cud it b possible its a wifi cell:S
